Bombus lapidarius, more commonly known as a bumble bee, can be one of any of the over 250 species under the genus Bombus. The Bumblebee’s soft, furry exterior is covered in little ‘pile’ which picks up pollen and redistributes it as the bee goes from flower to flower collecting nectar. Bumblebees are often used in children’s books due to their soft fuzzy exterior and arguable adorable aesthetic. In fact, children’s books seem to be the reason we call them Bumblebees and not by their original name, Humblebees, which predates the first common usage by around 80 years.
