PCC’s Illumination Project tackles immigration

A student leadership program designed to address issues of oppression through interactive classroom and theater productions is ready for its close-up.

The Illumination Project at ����TV has released its 2011 winter schedule, which includes productions ����TV, local high schools and other colleges and universities. It’s not a typical performance. A diverse group of 20 students have produced original plays addressing racism and immigration that are based on their real-life experiences.

“By developing their own short plays and involving the audience in ways that puts them in other’s shoes, it gives the PCC students an opportunity to develop skills as educators and leaders as well as to enlighten the audience on social justice issues,” said Jeannie LaFrance, Illumination Project founder and coordinator.

These productions are free and open to the public as well as wheelchair accessible. The PCC schedule includes:

The program is part of the Sylvania Women’s Resource Center and sponsored through the Sylvania Multicultural Center, and the college’s Sociology and Theater Arts programs.
